Section R7-2-305. Declaration of Independence

The governing board of each common school district shall adopt policies that:

1.        Require pupils to recite the following passage from the Declaration of Independence for pupils in grades 4 through 6 at the commencement of the first class of the day in the schools: “We hold these truths to be self-evi- dent, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. That to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.”; and

2.        Enable the pupil or the parent or legal guardian of the pupil to object to reciting the passage of the Declaration of Independence, and that specify that a pupil shall not be required to participate if the pupil or the pupil’s parent or guardian objects.
